Jen Clements Bride of the Year!

Woohoo! Congratualtions to Jen... we've just found out that she won Bride of the Year!
We get to spend 2 nights at the luxurious 12 Apostles in Camps Bay.
Lucky we will be going back to South Africa in October so can redeem the prize then!

wedding rings for guys

When I got Jen's wedding ring we looked at hundreds of shops... thousands of different designs... the 4 c's... etc

I then went looking for something unique for me...

The options were:
a plain band in gold,
a plain band in silver,
a plain band in platinum,
or, a plain band in titanium.

That's when I decided to design my own ring and do a jewellery course with Jen so she could make it - it turned out great - black diamonds on the one side and rainbow sapphires on the other (see pic ).

We'll, I have continued the jewellery course and am now making wedding rings for men (among other things).

So, if you are interested in having something more unique, drop me a mail and we can discuss the design.
If you're going to wear something for the rest of your life, you may as well like it.
I am busy developing a brand identity for the label: rocco.
You can email me your ideas for a design to roccocreations@gmail.com or check out http://www.roccoblogs.wordpress.com

If you not sure what you want, mail me anyway and I can send you some pics of pieces I've made.

Our first dance...

Jen and I wanted to do something unique for the 1st dance at our wedding.
We met with a professional instructor and when we played our song and explained what we wanted to do, he didn't quite get it. That's when we went hunting and found Tarryn.
Right from the start she knew exactly what we were trying to achieve. Her passion and excitement was contagious and she had some really great ideas on how we could make it an amazing dance.
I've got a couple of left feet but she came up with some easy to follow moves and after only a few lessons we were styling. We even used the bridesmaids and groomsmen as back-up dancers.
It was so much fun. When we did the dance at the wedding everyone went wild! They loved it so much we were asked to do it again. Unbelievable.
High five Tarryn, you're really great!

reminder...

Don't forget your sleeping bags etc if you are staying over...
and remember to charge the batteries in your camera.

Unfortunately what goes on tour no longer stays on tour... the pics of the bachelor and hen party are up on facebook - check it out.

Woah, it's nearly wedding time...

Time to leave:
If you are in Cape Town and want to get to the venue by 3, we would suggest that you are on the road by about 1:30.
It's only an hour and a half drive, but better to be on the safe side and enjoy the scenery.
p.s. don't forget to print out the directions below and bring them with you.
Oh, and if you have a fancy fast car that doesn't have much clearance underneath, you should prob take it easy on the 1km gravel road.

heels or no heels?
For those girls (and the odd guy) out there who were wondering whether or not to wear high-heels... as you can see in the pick it will be a bit tricky.
We will be on the river bank for the ceremony, but for the reception you should be fine so it's up to you.
Jen will be wearing high-heels of course :)

Sponsored Groomsmen

In keeping with the rainbow theme of the wedding, we wanted to have the groomsmen and bridesmaids in each colour of the rainbow. Before we bought the shoes, Jeff (a long standing Converse fan) dropped Converse an email to tell them about the wedding and see if they wanted to sponsor the shoes... it was a long shot... but hey, why not?

They replied the next day and said they could make a plan... How flippen cool are they!?

We are still working out who gets which colour shoes (red, orange, yellow for Dave, Gareth, Marty).
Jeff has got the killer "Rainbow Africa" pair!

Special thanks has got to go to the legends at Converse- you guys rock.

On Sat Jen began some serious metal work…

To give it extra special meaning she even put a couple of drops of her blood into the silver pellets before smelting. The jewellery design teacher was initially a bit shocked but she seemed to like the idea. It was quite funny coz the course is held at a gold museum in town and there were a couple tourists watching this happen from outside.
All in the name of love :)

RSVP...

Please post a comment below to let us know if you can make the wedding or not.
also, if...

1) you would like to stay over in the dorm-style accomodation available
2) if you have any special dietary needs.

Great, thanks

The Bridesmaids

Introducing the three gorgeous bridesmaids…

Jen Cocks
"The Jens" is what Jen and I were called at Varsity. We met at La Med during orientation week and sat next to each other in our first law lecture. We instantly became tight friends and spent the next four years in each other's pockets and a lot of el vino did flow. We partied together, ate together, studied together, cried together when we thought we'd failed, drank together when we passed and for numerous other reasons (or no reason at all) and even lived together in our final year. Jen at one point called 5fm when they were running some kind of show about how well you know your friends and I got a surprise phone call from a DJ who asked me 8 questions about Jen, all of which I think I answered correctly. So you can say we know each other well. Jen is always there at the drop of a hat when I need her and I can always count on her for an honest opinion. Jen is currently completely her law articles, specializing in litigation, at C & A Friedlander. She is a little tiger!

Gill Salmon
I have known Gill, or "Roo" as I call her affectionately, for 23 years. We met at Mrs Ryan's playgroup when we were 2 and have been friends ever since. We grew up together over the years we attended Oakhurst and Herschel. Gill is one of those all-rounders who everybody loves. She is overboard intelligent, good at everything she does and such a rad person. My first memories of most things include Gill and we have had many happy weekends at her family's house in Hermanus. Although she's spent the last while overseas we have a great comfortable connection where we can pick up exactly where we left off. Right now Gill is in Koa Tao, Thailand where she works as an underwater videographer (what a cool job!). She'll be back in Cape Town in early September. Yay! Ps. She is probably the smartest and one of the funniest girls you'll ever meet!

Suzie Keey
In my first year of varsity Jen was living with Suzie (or "Hoerie" as we like to call her in jest). I saw this gorgeous, tall, bambi-eyed girl and thought she was going to be arrogant and intimidating. Boy was I wrong! Suz is the most down-to-earth, humble, intelligent and kind person on the planet. We bonded over my GHD before they were readily available in SA and have spent many, many nights drinking Buitenverwagting Buiten Blanc and sharing pizzas at Banana Jam or Cosmos at Oblivion. Suz is wise beyond her years and someone I feel I can chat to about anything without worrying that she'll judge me. She is currently the manger (along with the lovely La Adler) of Just Frames which has taken her on buying trips to the UK, Europe and China in the last 2 years… tough life!

How was the m-bomb dropped?

It might be worth getting a cup of tea while your read this... it's a long one.

In May last year Jeff, Rob, Ash and I decided to go to Zanzibar for a holiday in December. I was so excited about this trip that I spent every spare second I had researching about the island, the places to stay and the activities that we could do while we were there. By the time we boarded our plane I could've been a Zanzibar tour guide even though I'd never set foot on the island. 
One of the activities that I was desperate to do was called 'Safari Blue'. This is a full day trip on a dhow that takes you island hopping from one postcard picture white-sand beach to the next and includes snorkeling, a visit to a mangrove forest plus fruit and a seafood lunch fit for a king.
When we arrived at our beach side resort the first thing I checked out was how much the Safari Blue tour would cost. It was expensive. I chatted to Jeff about it and we decided that as we still had two and a half weeks on the island we wouldn’t do it straight away and would see if we still had money for it at the end of the holiday. So I pushed Safari Blue to the back of my mind.
A few days later we were sitting having breakfast when one of the reception staff came to our table:
Reception dude: "Safari Blue for you today? Leave at 09h00."
Jen: *Sigh* "Sorry you have the wrong table, no Safari Blue for us today"
The reception dude walks away disgruntled and comes back 2 minutes later now with more insistence.
Reception Dude: "Safari Blue for YOU people TODAY!"
Jeff: *Through clenched teeth* "No Safari Blue for us today thank you!"
Reception Dude: *Puzzled* "You room 13?"
Jen: *Confused* "Yes, we're in room 13."
Reception Dude: *Staring at Jeff* "Yes!! YOU – Safari Blue today, you ask me yesterday!"
Jeff: *Apologetically to Jen* "Surprise Jen! We're going on Safari Blue today."
Jen: *Squealing with delight* "YAY!! Jeff, you're the best boyfriend in the world, oh my goodness I'm sooo lucky!! Yay yay yay!!"
So we went and packed our day packs and set off with Rob and Ash on a bumpy taxi ride to the South-East part of the island. We boarded a wooden boat and set off with our guides for a day of sea, sun and fun.
Our first stop was an island with a large Mangrove forest, we waded through the ankle deep water in-between the curling mass of tree roots and picked up a crab the size of a small dog! We then swam around the boat and did a bit of snorkeling. It was then time to move to our next island which was basically a deserted sheltered white sand beach surrounded by azure water and nothing else. We played Frisbee, ate fresh coconut and pineapple, drank ice-cold water, tanned, swam and snorkeled. Time for our next destination. No island this time, just putting the boat's anchor down next to a reef that was teeming with underwater plant life and the most incredible fish and strange sea-creatures! We jumped in and had a solid snorkel around the reef. Jeff and Rob found an underwater tunnel in the coral and decided to see if they could swim through it - which they did, but not without some scrapes and cuts. What can I say… boys will be boys! At this stage I think I need to mention that Jeff had been carrying the engagement ring in the pocket of his boardshorts the whole time and he had attached it to a key-chain thinking it would be safe. After this male 'swim through the underwater coral tunnel' competition, Jeff checked his pocket only to find that the ring was gone. It was no longer attached to the key-chain. Heart-failure! Luckily it was swimming around in his pocket (which was only held closed away from the vast ocean by a piece of Velcro the size of a fingernail). Jeff promptly whipped out a caribbeana (MacGyver style) and made sure that the ring wasn't going anywhere!
Now it was time for our last stop. Another beautiful island… Our guides prepared a gourmet array of seafood whilst we relaxed. Jeff went on a little "rekkie" and came back to find the seafood ready and waiting. We tucked in and didn’t stop until our bellies were about to pop! Jeff then announced that he wanted to show me something. We waddled around to the corner of the island and he told me to stand there, count to one hundred with my eyes closed and then to come and find him. I protested asking him what was going on and he just smiled and walked around the corner. "Strange!" I thought but closed my eyes and started counting, as I had been told. It took forever to get to one hundred with a million thoughts butting in to divert my attention. I walked around the corner and saw arrows in the sand. They lead me to a quiet shady spot where Jeff was waiting patiently for me on a sarong with a present wrapped beautifully in silver paper, with ribbon and shells. I sat down and he told me to open my present. Inside was a red book. The first page says "101 Reasons why Jeff loves Jen" and each double page after that has one reason why he loves me and a picture to describe each reason. The reasons started off fairly light-heartedly but proceeded to get more serious and meaningful as the list went on. When I hit about the 60th reason it suddenly dawned on me… "This is it, he's proposing… OMG!!!!" I was so anxious and overwhelmed with excitement that from reasons 60 – 101 I could hardly read, I was just flipping through the pages like a crazy woman trying to get to the end. The third last page says "These are just a few reasons that make me want to know…" and then you turn over to a picture of a guy on one knee saying "Will you marry me?". I looked up to see Jeff on one knee offering me a coconut with the top cut off. I peered into the coconut and sitting unassumingly on the white flesh was my beautiful ring with three fat sparkly diamonds staring up at me… I was so overwhelmed I started balling and hyperventilating and messed up my answer which should have been a screaming "YES!!!" with a shocked "No Jeff, No!" Jeff looked like he'd been hit by a bus and said "Are you saying 'No'?" and I was like "NO!! I'm saying 'YES', of course I'll marry you, oh my goodness ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" and then after about five minutes of happy tears and taking a few deep breaths we were interrupted by one of our guides. It was time to go back to Zanzibar.
We walked back around the corner of the island grinning like kids with a naughty secret and we saw Rob and Ash. I thrust my left hand forward and revealed my shiny ring and Rob and Ash went mental. There was so much jumping, screaming, tears and hugging it was just incredible. It's a very special feeling to experience sheer unbridled happiness and to have three of the most awesome people in the world to share it with! The guides noticing all the commotion asked me what "it" was. I thought they were talking about my ring and proudly showed it to them. What I didn’t realize was that they were actually interested in the coconut that I was still desperately clutching in my right hand, wanting to save it as a souvenir. Haha. We had a good laugh about that!
We hopped back on the boat and the ride back to Zanzibar flew past in a blur of excited chatter, high fives and smses home. We got back to our resort and Rob and Ash bought us champers and we drank and danced the night away. It was such a special day, one I'll never ever forget .
